For too many years the aggregates industry in Indiana has not been concerned with their future. There was always someone that wanted a good paying job and willing to work for it. Well, that has been changing for some time now and it has become time to figure out ways to communicate to a new generation what we do and what we have to offer for careers.
Aggregates and in particular limestone is a part of so much of what we have and use in our everyday lives. You probably already know that they are in asphalt and concrete products. Our roads, bridges, houses, hospitals, schools, etc. all have them. But did you know that they are used to make steel, glass, toothpaste, carpet backing, animal feeds, roofing shingles, scrub sulfur dioxide in power plants, and even to harden the eggshells around the eggs you eat for breakfast. These are just a few of the many, many end products that certain aggregates enhance or help to form.
So what kind of jobs do we have and need? Well, we need geologists, mining engineers, safety managers, accountants, IT specialists, equipment operators, quality control specialists, diesel mechanics, welders, sales & marketing representatives, and administrative persons of all types – and these are just a few of the many diverse careers in our industry.
Historically our industry attracts workers that stay in the industry and many families have multiple persons in the workforce. That’s because they are good paying jobs with benefits and they are mostly year round, not seasonal.
So what can we do about all this? That’s where IMMEP comes in.
IMMEP was set up to gather funds to be able to award scholarships to anyone that wants to pursue a career in or related to the aggregates industry. You don’t have to be a senior in high school or someone already in college. Perhaps you have already been in the workforce for a few years and want to retrain yourself and start a new career in our industry. We want to reach out to those that have the interest and determination to succeed in their careers.
Please help us fund this great opportunity and help us extend our reach to those that might not know about what we do and have to offer.
